Sustainable tourism in L'Ametlla de Mar
In L'Ametlla de Mar, we are actively working to promote a model of sustainable tourism that allows visitors to enjoy its unique natural surroundings without compromising them. Below, we outline some initiatives and practices that can be carried out or are already being implemented to foster sustainable tourism in the area:
-
Environmental Conservation: L'Ametlla de Mar is renowned for its beautiful beaches and coves. To protect these areas, measures have been implemented such as regular beach cleanups during the summer season and the preservation of seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) on the beaches throughout the rest of the year. The presence of this seagrass indicates excellent water quality. In our municipality, it is common to find remnants of these plants along the shoreline or in bathing areas. This serves as a clear sign that the sea water enjoys outstanding health. Posidonia and other seagrasses form large underwater meadows that host a wide variety of species, both vertebrates and invertebrates.
-
Quality Certifications: The municipality has received several environmental quality certifications, such as the Blue Flag and the Green Flag, which ensure compliance with strict criteria for water quality, environmental management, safety, and services.
-
Education and Awareness: Awareness campaigns are organized for both residents and visitors to promote sustainable practices, through talks, workshops, and informational materials. The goal is to raise consciousness about the importance of preserving the natural and cultural environment.
-
Promotion of Local Cuisine: The consumption of local and proximity products is encouraged, particularly highlighting the rich gastronomy of the municipality, with dishes made from fresh Mediterranean fish and seafood. This contributes to the economic and cultural sustainability of the area.
-
Active and Nature Tourism: L'Ametlla de Mar offers a wide variety of tourist activities that allow visitors to enjoy nature in a sustainable way, such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, and snorkeling.
-
Respect for the Environment: Leave no trace. Collect all your litter to avoid leaving any mark on nature. At the same time, be mindful of your water and energy consumption during your stay. Turn off lights and air conditioning when not in use.
-
Promotion of Cultural Heritage: Participate in guided tours that highlight the local history and culture, such as historical tours of the town and visits to the Civil War fortifications. Recently, we also offer tours of the Efimurs. “Efimurs” was born from the collaboration between the Tourism Department of the L'Ametlla de Mar Town Hall and the funding provided by the Next Generation European funds. This project has led to the creation of eleven large-format murals in various styles within the urban art discipline, aimed at bringing this artistic form closer to the local community and creating a correlation of benefits for both the participants and the urban landscape of L'Ametlla de Mar, which will be enhanced and committed to art under the motto: L'Ametlla de Mar, the most natural cove.
-
Conservation of the PEIN Areas (Areas of Natural Interest) within the Municipality: L'Ametlla de Mar has had Natura 2000 and Natural Interest Area (PEIN) plans for years, protecting spaces for their ecological, geological, botanical, or faunal value. In L'Ametlla, these protected areas are known for their rich biodiversity and marine ecosystems. The beaches, cliffs, and wetlands are important habitats for many species.
Practicing sustainable tourism in L'Ametlla de Mar allows you to enjoy a rewarding vacation while contributing to the conservation of its natural and cultural environment. Every small action matters to ensure that this wonderful destination can be enjoyed by future generations.
